I dont know if any of you guys have been to the Berlin-Ithysaur state park in central Nevada.
Kind of a cool place, an Old Ghostown with an underground silver mine tour, and some the largest Icthyosaur fossils in the world (they were giant swimming reptiles that lived in the ocean.
Its off the beaten path, but an interesting place to visit.
There is actually some placer gold very near there as well.
I did up a web page on the place with pictures:

I didn't understand this captions meaning. (Garnet Hill is a well known location for its fine garnet mineral specimens. The directions here tell you all you need to know to hunt there......) http://nevada-outback-gems.com/Rockhound/Nevada_Ichthyosaur.htm _________________ (-)~(-)

I was planning a trip to that area before the fires and decided to postpone for a while. Your article was timely and helpful. Is it OK to use a metal detector in and around Ione? _________________ (-)~(-)

I fixed the typo now -thanks for letting me know.
There are some private claims around Ione, and in Ione is some private property, but off the claims and private property, on unclaimed BLM land of course is OK.

Thanks for the link..
Those fossils are worth some big money if you ever find one- excavate and preserve it. I'm sure there's more in that area.It pays to keep your eyes open for anything. Gold isn't the only thing of value in the field as you just never know what you might come across.

| Sorry bout the spelling, If you go thru Berlin on youre way to the big fish instead of taking a right turn up to the building that houses the fossils just follow the road about a quarter mile till youre out of the state park walk in the mountains on your left hand side lots of shell fossils and some fish,,I did find some ribs to something up there they were about a foot long but busted in 4 or 5 pieces,,,,,,if youre metal detecting for gold look on a map from Berlin I believe its the third canyon to the right ,,,I know someone that panned the little stream there and came up with 2 good size nuggets ...hope that helps anyone |
