I went down to Garnet Hill in Ely this fall most of the people that I met down there was busting the garnets out of the rock, The way that My wife and I found our garnets was to sift the dirt in the washes with screens. the picture below is about 2 hours worth of sifting.
That's quite a good showing, I was thinking about maybe going over there on a side trip from detecting but was told they were pretty much mined out as far as the garnets. Looks like that's the way to find them, sift the dirt.

I don't think that the people have even scratched the surface on garnet hill, I grew up in Ely and I can still find garnets just about any where on the hill. The washes treat the garnets just like gold and push them down the hill until they are stopped in pockets. The garnets that I found were in a space of about 10 feet in one wash.
