THE MINING JOURNAL APRIL 15 1929

TEXAS

Work is in progress on the erection of a new power plant at the Southwestern Portland Cement Company, four miles north of El Paso, Texas, at an expenditure of approximately $175,000, it is stated. The old power plant will be replaced by aN 8,500 kilowatt Westinghouse steam turbine, which is expected to be in operation in May.
A short time ago the company installed an electric precipitation plant to save the dust and prevent its being carried away. In this plant, cathodes charged with from 30,000 to 40,-000 volts gather and precipitate the dust into bins, making a recovery of nearly four tons per hour. The company, of which H. B. Nichols, Box 892, El Paso, is superintendent, has entered into a contract to use natural gas when the new pipeline from El Paso is completed. Main offices of the company are located at Two Republics Building, El Paso.

Six hundred employees of the El Paso smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Company will benefit by a wage increase of 25 cents a day, as announced by Brent N. Rickard, general manager. The wage increase, which is allotted all employees who are on a daily wage basis, is made effective from March 17, and amounts to a $150 per day increase in the company’s payroll.

TIDBITS OF INFO- TEXAS

MINING JOURNAL, JULY 15, 1930

Shafter, TX, an attractive little silver mining camp, south of Marfa, practically ended its existence, with the closing of the Presidio Mining Company, the town’s sole support. There is good ore at the mine, but the decline is silver prices has brought about the mines closing, for the present anyway. 200 miners and mill hands were given their last pay, and told to look elsewhere for employment. Store owners are leaving immediately. There are 2 people left at the mine to watch over the property until things look up.”

TEXAS

Thomas A. Courchesne, manager of the A. Courchesne Co., Inc., El Paso, Texas, has been awarded the contract for furnishing silica rock for the Nichols Copper Company’s refinery, now under construction at that place. Mr. Courchesne has leased a large deposit of high-grade quartzite, near the El Paso smelter, from Llew H. Davis, and a new compressor and drills have been installed for mining about 100 tons daily. The quartz is said to average around 98 per cent silica ore. The rock is crushed to one-half inch size at the Courchesne quarry, located near the Southwestern Portland Cement Company’s works at El Paso.

Improvements announced some time ago, for the El Paso Smelter, of American Smelting & Refining Company, in addition to the installation of natural gas for fuel, have been rapidly progressing in both the lead, and copper departments. A Dwight & Lloyd sinter crushing plant is now under construction, in the lead department for crushing the once-roasted product, and a dross reverberatory is being constructed to handle the lead department dross. Four of the six lead blast furnaces formerly in use are to be torn down, two being retained for the present. Two new furnaces are being built with redesigned crucible, jackets and tuyeres. A new Cottrell plant of the plate type, has recently been placed in successful operation in the copper department. The El Paso Works are in charge of Brent N. Rickard, manager, and E. R. TEXAS

Shafter, Texas, an attractive little silver mining camp, on Alameda Creek, 48 miles south of Marfa, practically ended its existence July 1, with the closing of properties of the Presidio Mining Company, the town’s sole support. The low price for silver, was given by officials as the cause for the shutdown. Approximately 200 miners and mill hands, were given notice to seek work elsewhere. Most of the miners were Mexicans, and have started toward the border, with the Americans, heading northward. Store owners will leave immediately, and all that will remain will be a pumpman, and watchman.
=-=-=-=-=
No reduction in pay will result from the changing of the day force, at the Nichols Copper Company’s refinery, at El Paso, from a nine-hour, to an eight-hour, working day schedule, according to an announcement of F. M. Shaw, manager. The change was put into effect June 28. The night shift has always been on an eight-hour basis. The plant will continue to operate on the 75 percent of capacity schedule, under which it has been running since its opening.
