8 Pound Ridge

Has anyone heard of this? Can you give us a location? I believe it is in the Imlay/Mill City area.
Goldfinger

Good luck trying to find this one Very Happy I don't think you're going to get too much information until it's been worked out. But if I had to venture a guess- I would probably say somewhere in the Humboldt Mtns to the south of Imlay. There's a road that goes up through a canyon back into the Humboldts. Lots of interesting looking ground- most of which has never been detected.

Thanks Steve. It's actually the other way, and not far from Scossa but I did run into your buddy Richard last week and I think he came from where you are talking about with about 1/4 oz of small nuggets. He said he walked a long ways that day. We had a few beers and a pizza at the Oasis.

Slim-

Didn't mean to steer you in the wrong direction. Rolling Eyes   But if I was going to choose an area to hunt, that's where I would start. Lots of patches have been found in that whole general area and I'm sure there's a few left yet. Just have to " go where no man has gone before" Wink

Richard probably knows more then anyone in that area about where the old patches are and is quite a character and storyteller too. Hope to get back out there soon so I can visit him.

8lb Ridge? I don't know, but that reminds me of easy patch, where they took out 300 oz. in the Eugenes. There are also interesting areas in the northern East Range NE of Mill City. That would be my guess, but it's only a guess. The foothills just North of Winnemucca also still have some golden surprises, so I hear.

Rex-

That 300 ounce patch sounds like the one a lucky guy from Winnemmuca found over near Jungo road in the early-mid 90's. We called it " The Million Dollar Patch" at the time. Gold was selling for only $250.00-$300 per oz during that period. He claimed it up then brought in all sorts of heavy equipment to uncover more. Don't know if he ever recovered his expenses with the gold found using the heavy machinery though.

It does seem like the gold is often in a surface concentration - if you scrape down too much, you just get through it and there isnt much more left.

You certainly can't blame him for trying to uncover more using bulldozers, etc but it sounds like he went way  too far with it. From what I heard-he spent quite a bit on leasing equipment and never came close to recuperating his costs.

that's why gold is elusive.  where you think it is, it isn't.  to a certain extent, what is found on the surface is actually the bottom of the paystreak with all the overburden eroded off through geological weathering.

With the exception of ancient river channels and veins, placer gold is a surface phenomena (though some is found in pockets where the earth folded), and the veins, being uneroded gold laden shoots, are pretty much the only placement underground.  Indeed most of the really good placer areas was born of old eroded gold veins whose stocks and tracings are not part of the current strata or substrate.

You'd think it was different, but we forget that the whole process started millenia ago and we are living on the tail end

It's in the majuba placers. Lot's of folks camp right on it.
Just look for all my old dig holes :)
