FORUM CONTEST-ALL GUESSES DUE FEB. 5TH AT MIDNIGHTPRIZES:
The contest prizes are one genuine ruby crystal from the Caler Creek deposit in Cowee Valley, North Carolina found by myself probably around 1998 before my family divided the land and sold the mine in 2001. Most of the unsalted mines are now closed and it is difficult to find a native NC ruby these days due to that fact.
I'm also including one faceted ruby which is not from North Carolina. I can't remember the exact location of the cut stone although I think it is either from Africa or Burma. Since 99% of cut rubies are treated in some form or another I'm sure this one is no exception. I purchased it on eBay for a very reasonable price, if you bought it in a jewelry shop already mounted on a ring, of course you would pay quite a bit more.
Unfortunately, I can't locate my carat scale, so I can only estimate the weights. I think the rough stone is around 5 carats and the cut stone about a carat.
CONTEST:
The one who comes closest to the spot gold bid price for Wednesday Feb. 6th at 10pm MST is the Winner of his or her choice of the cut or rough stone. The runner up takes whatever is left over. All guesses must end the previous day at midnight (the 5th) Of course I wouldn't recommend guessing until closer to the deadline.
Good Luck Everyone,
Rex

Today is my birthday. I'm 57 years old now. And it's time that I owned a purdy red ruby in my collection of rocks, gems and minerals.

I'm sorry but the posts dated Feb 6th are invalid per the rules stated in contest. I had to have a cut-off in advance so those closest to the closing time would not have an unfair advantage. I should have locked this post last night.

From what I can determine Magician is the winner and Mrfrogdude is the runner-up. Magician let me know which prize you would like and I will send it out to you.

My sincere thanks, too, Rex, for hosting this exciting contest! It was an absolute thrill to (almost constantly) watch the spot price of that glimmering gold bounch around like it did, hoping it would end up in close proximity to my wild guess, by your deadline. I kind of figured it would drop a bit when I made my prediction on Monday, the 4th, and then climb back up to around my figure after the elections. But, not so! It took a deeper dive than I predicted, and then rose back up to around that same doggone 'niner figure it was on Monday when I posted my guess. Well, I was close, anyhow.
...But, unfortunately, no cigar.
If there is ever a another fun contest like this one, you can bet the farm, that I'll win next time.
Thanks, Rex.

Treasure Master,
It did jump around quite a bit, not an easy task to guess the right price, more difficult than I intended, but I guess it was good that it wasn't too easy of a challenge.
Congrats Magician and mrfrogdude,
Magician,
I will let you know that even though the rough stone is only specimen quality, a five carat stone from that mine is fairly rare.
mrfrogdude,
Glad you won, especially if it has been awhile for you when it comes to winning a contest.
Thanks also to everyone who participated, sorry for the late entry disqualifications.
Rex
