Work is in progress on the erection of a new power plant at the Southwestern Portland Cement Company, four miles north of El Paso, Texas, at an expenditure of approximately $175,000, it is stated. The old power plant will be replaced by aN 8,500 kilowatt Westinghouse steam turbine, which is expected to be in operation in May.
A short time ago the company installed an electric precipitation plant to save the dust and prevent its being carried away. In this plant, cathodes charged with from 30,000 to 40,-000 volts gather and precipitate the dust into bins, making a recovery of nearly four tons per hour. The company, of which H. B. Nichols, Box 892, El Paso, is superintendent, has entered into a contract to use natural gas when the new pipeline from El Paso is completed. Main offices of the company are located at Two Republics Building, El Paso.

Six hundred employees of the El Paso smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Company will benefit by a wage increase of 25 cents a day, as announced by Brent N. Rickard, general manager. The wage increase, which is allotted all employees who are on a daily wage basis, is made effective from March 17, and amounts to a $150 per day increase in the company’s payroll.

Shafter, TX, an attractive little silver mining camp, south of Marfa, practically ended its existence, with the closing of the Presidio Mining Company, the town’s sole support. There is good ore at the mine, but the decline is silver prices has brought about the mines closing, for the present anyway. 200 miners and mill hands were given their last pay, and told to look elsewhere for employment. Store owners are leaving immediately. There are 2 people left at the mine to watch over the property until things look up.”

Shafter, Texas, an attractive little silver mining camp, on Alameda Creek, 48 miles south of Marfa, practically ended its existence July 1, with the closing of properties of the Presidio Mining Company, the town’s sole support. The low price for silver, was given by officials as the cause for the shutdown. Approximately 200 miners and mill hands, were given notice to seek work elsewhere. Most of the miners were Mexicans, and have started toward the border, with the Americans, heading northward. Store owners will leave immediately, and all that will remain will be a pumpman, and watchman.

It is understood that there will be but a small reduction in the number of workmen employed at the Nichols Copper Refinery, at El Paso, as a result of the 15 percent curtailment in production at the plant. The new measure adopted reduces output from 8,500 to 6,600 tons per month, according to Charles W. Nichols, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Nichols Copper has declared a quarterly dividend of 43 ¾ cents per share, payable December 31, to stock of record December 20, compared with 75 cents per share paid three months ago. Class A and B stock have been on a parity, as to dividends, since June 30, 1930. Prior to that date the Class A shares had preference to the amount of $1.75 a share per year.

Work on construction of the Antimony Smelting Plant, north of Laredo, Texas, is reported progressing most satisfactorily. Several of the 11 buildings that will occupy the 15-acre site, are nearing completion, and it is expected that operations may be started at the plant in December. The first units are being built at a cost of $100,000, and the completed plant is expected to involve an expenditure of approximately $500,000.

It is understood that the Texas Mining & Smelting Company is the organization back of this work, and that the Republican Mining & Metal Company, Ltd., operating antimony mines at Wadley, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, is also interested in the project.

Officials of the two organizations have been supervising the construction work, and H. P. Henderson of New York, President of the Texas Mining & Smelting Company, is expected to establish headquarters at Laredo. Others who are expected there, are J. B. Harper, Vice-President and General Manager, and W. J. Graveling, Second Vice-President, and General Superintendent.

W. J. MORAN REPORTS ON NICKEL ORE FOUND IN TEXAS

W. J. Moran of Midland, Texas, has completed a report on his conclusions, with reference to his discovery of a nickel and cobalt ore deposit, in western Texas, near the Stateline of New Mexico, announcement of which was made several months ago. The deposit was discovered by Mr. Moran some years ago, while in search of a supposed vein of coal, but it was not until about a year ago that he became aware of its possible value.

Samples from the deposit were forwarded to A. W. Forstall, Professor of Chemistry at St. Regis College, in Denver, who reported the ore to contain “notable quantities of both cobalt and nickel,” and who expressed opinion that the property might be worthy of development. Mr. Moran finally decided to further explore the property.

A core test was completed on the holdings last month, drilling having taken place in the vicinity of the old diamond drill test of 1917, revealing what is believed to be a nickel ore deposit of considerable thickness, and of a percentage of the two minerals mentioned, to justify commercial mining. Mr. Moran hopes to be able to arrange for further exploration on the property, and a thorough sampling of the deposit, for full determination of its worth.

It is planned that if potash deposits are found, the Potash Corporation of America will deepen the drill holes with the expectation of finding commercial oil and gas. Work for the potash corporation will be under the supervision of C. S. Peterson of Los Angeles, who was recently promoted from Secretary-treasurer to Vice-president of the company.
