Weekend at RP

Last weekend I went out to Rye Patch to do a little nugget shooting with my youngest boy. I found a small .3 gram nugget first thing in the morning, and thought it was going to be a real good trip. I was to meet a friend out there a little later in the morning, he arrived about 9:00 am but as he pulled into camp I had seen that he had two flat tires. We did a little detecting, with no luck. We decided that we should get into town to get some new tires for his rig. We got back to camp around 2:00 pm and detected for a couple more hours still with no luck. After he left I found a 1 gram piece, then my wife and oldest boy came out there to do some nugget shooting with us, but when she got there she also had a flat tire. She stayed with me the night, and detected until noon on Sunday with no luck. After she left I found my last piece which was another .3 gram piece. Then I had to go home. Any trip that I find even a small piece of gold is a good trip.

IRM, good lookin gold there, I went up Hinkey summit 2 weeks ago and had 2 flats also. You're lucky to find anything @ RP with all the traffic..Maybe we'll see each other in the field...Good luck...Tim

Nice looking nuggets, sounds like the roads must be pretty rough with all the flat tires out there. I hope to get over there next week and hopefully post something when I get back.

Hey Rex, looks like I might finally get to share a campfire with ya as I will be there next weekend too. And I will have my tire repair kit and a compressor on board!

El Dorado,

That compressor and tire patch kit might come in handy! Have a good trip on the road out there.

Rex:

The secret of the flat tires is to not drive fast.

All the old timers and even me (a not so old timer) will tell you to slow down to a speed no more than about 40 mph max.

The rock out there in the RP area is a shale that breaks to sharp pieces, at speeds greather than 40 you start to have situations where your fron tires flip up the sharp rock fragments, and before they can lay down flat again, the back tire goes over them, causing a puncture.

Slow down and this wont happen - above 50 mph it is virtually guarenteed.

One of the little secrets of the desert.

Hi Rex and Chris,

I can attest to Rye Patch being rough on tires...
and I was driving with your advice in mind; never
went over 40 and STILL got a puncture.
I am just glad it was on the way out and not the other
way 'round...it would have made for a long afternoon.
As it was, being around a bunch of WSPA partners,
I had a can of tire seal donated that lasted long enough
to make it into Lovelock yesterday for a real fixin...

I drove for ten plus hours yesterday to get back to
Topanga Canyon (near L.A.), in time for dinner.
No problems with tires, just a few frazzled brain cells.

Nice to meet you Chris, those were some nice evenings
sitting around your campfire.
Thanks,

Flak

I ended up with one flat myself. It took about 24 hours to go flat so I was able to keep it pumped up for the trip home. It was about out of tread and needed replacement anyway, so I just got a new tire.

On the other hand, John B raced all over the desert and never got a flat. What can I say?

Chris
